Service No.2 Khukuri (British Gurkhas Training knife)

It is one (second) of the standard issue khukuris of the legendary British Gurkhas. Recruits are issued with this full unpolished kukri knife for training, exercise, assignment and for combat sometimes.

The inclusion of Service Ceremonial (no.1 khukuri) into standard issued kukri knives in early 1990’s also brought the initiation or need for a rough utility knife for actually using that was filled in by the Service No.2 or the Training Knife, also know as the No.2 Sarkhari khukuri in army vocabulary. And consequently Service No.2 was also made the second issue khukuri to all new recruits by army officials. Now from early 1990’s, like never before a new soldier would get 2 khukuri as per the choice and requirement of the army standard from the appointed local contractors. The same “Jungle” knife that soldiers bought in past was upgraded and made a part of standard issued khukuris to the Gurkhas. This action by army is primarily executed to bring more uniformity and tidiness, be it in “Parade” or in “raw Terrain”.

Like its old counterparts the khukuri is totally unpolished from tip to tail including its two small accompanying knives. However, unlike its predecessors, the blade is slightly thicker and wider with a steep peak. A rat tail tang goes through the handle (hidden) which is peened over at the brass pommel (butt cap). The blade is identical to Service No.1, totally unpolished however. Any kind of stamping is also not done. The total unpolished format also comes as an advantage as it enhances the cutting ability and durability of the blade as losing of temper is prevented by avoiding the long machinery process undertaken to polish a blade.

The scabbard is plain and simple made from water buffalo hide. It has double loop belt holder (frog) with a fasten-up system. The double loops are secured by black rivets for a strong fixture. A protective brass chape (tip) is also fitted in the scabbard for support and look. The unpolished horn handle of the Jungle provides better grip and easier handling too. Some No.2s are also camouflaged by green cotton cloth or similar materials by soldiers for warfare to ensemble with their uniform and not to attract any unwanted attention. Service No.2 because of its typical look, special feature and very close association with the legendary Gurkhas is one of the best sellers of all times. It is an all-out all-purpose utility knife that carries the history, and also has all characters of an assault knife.

I served as an officer in 42 Commando Royal Marines in Singapore and North Borneo in the early 1960’s, where I was trained by Gurkha officers and soldiers in jungle warfare. In those days it was not possible to buy a genuine Kukri made in Nepal, and it would be unthinkable to ask a Gurkha soldier if you could buy his. I did, however, buy one from a company in India, which I carried and used, but it was of inferior quality and was probably meant to be hung on the wall as a souvenir! The end of the handle broke and the sheath fell apart in the heat and damp of the jungle. A Chinese shoemaker made a new leather sheath for it and I gave it to a friend before returning to the UK.

The Kukri made for me by Bhakti BDR B.K at Khukuri House is something else entirely! This is a knife that a soldier of one of the finest fighting regiments in the world would use and carry into battle, and I say that as an ex-soldier myself. Very many thanks to all the Kamis at Khukuri House for a beautifully crafted and superb quality Kukri that I am proud to own, and for all the memories that it brings back. It will remain in my family and be passed on to my sons. A Kukri is more than just a knife. It embodies all the history of a proud and noble people, and acts of gallantry in so many conflicts in recent history in the hands of Nepal’s most famous representative, the Gurkha soldier.

An authentic, perfectly proportioned and balanced Kukri of the great quality. Ordered as a present for my son just 3 weeks before Christmas. The team at Kukri House pulled out all the stops to manufacture and ship here in time! Great service and communication throughout.

Great knife

I was mostly happy with this purchase. They got all the small custom parts that I wanted, sharp beauty of a blade. However, the sheath for my blade broke after only 2 times removing the blade from its sheath, and I was doing it correctly. I got the 3-ply frog and the buttons/attachment points appear to be made of a cheap plastic rivet that just simply did not hold. I got a 3ply frog on the other knife I ordered and it’s holding up just fine. A little disappointed but overall happy I guess

Excellent!!

After 1 month waiting for the knife due to all this craziness of covid-19 it finally arrived. First impression is that this is a job done with a high level of commitment and professionalism . It is hard to believe it is hand made due to the quality of the final product. You have to pay close attention to realize of the small details of the manufacturing process. It is a robust but at the same time fine work of art. Truly the maker did an excellent work. Only thing to mention is that I asked for the blade to be engraved an it came blank, but I blame that on me cause I let them know about engraving a few days after I placed the order. Other than that... really good work, serious company, good customer service. Very satisfied with my purchase.
