Hanshee: a masterful revival of the historic khukuri

khukuri-house-hansheeThe word 'Hanshee' comes from 'Hansiya' a sickle-like domestic tool in south asian region.

History

The Hanshee khukuri originated in the late 18th century during Nepal's unification era (1750-1770), where it was wielded by warriors in battles that forged the nation. It gained further prominence in the Anglo-Nepal War (1814-1816), known for its long hilt and relatively narrow, strongly curved blade that allowed for swift, powerful strikes in combat, mostly for slashing. The design reflects early khukuri evolution, often associated with aristocratic users due to its elegant yet functional form.

Hanshee is the oldest documented style of khukuri, predating the more angular designs seen in the 20th century. Characterized by its extreme, continuous curvature and lack of a distinct "shoulder," the Hanshee was the preferred sidearm of Gorkhali warriors during the unification of Nepal in the 18th century. It represents a time when the blade was as much a status symbol as it was a survival tool.

The Design
This Hanshee is a faithful replica available on the internet. 8mm thick steel is tapered down towards the edge and tip. Blade is further decorated with small liner corotion and brass dots (each in 6 formation) to make the blade collectors' pride, as this type of blade is hardly used these days but it's made fully functional as per 'Khukuri House' quality standards. The blade is satin finished.

handle-and-blade-of-Hanshee-khukuriThe Curve: The Hanshee is designed to maximize the physics of the "pull-cut." The deep arc shifts the center of gravity forward, allowing the blade to bite deeper into targets with less physical effort.

The Handle: Historically elongated to counterbalance the blade, providing a versatile grip for both heavy chopping and fluid, sweeping motions, and easy slashing.

The Sheath: Made from classic leather, the sun and moon patch is added to represent Nepal, as the khukuri was part of Nepal's unification. The sheath itself represents the craftsmanship of the sheath maker.
